U.K. - EuroMillions and UK Millionaire Maker Prize Breakdown

EuroMillions UK is the British version of Europe’s premier lottery EuroMillions, with the added twist of hosting the UK Millionaire Raffle during the live draws every Tuesday and Friday night. This special combination of raffle and lottery, along with Super Draws throughout the year, means that the UK National Lottery often holds the unofficial title of ‘Most Millionaires Made’ in any given year. In 2012, more than 250 millionaires were created by EuroMillions UK alone.

*Weirs vs. Bayfords – who won more?

In January 2012, lottery officials responsible for EuroMillions announced that the €190 million jackpot cap that existed at the time would become a fixed jackpot cap that would no longer automatically increase by €5 million once a prize of that value was won. This meant that a single ticket that won the €190,000,000 would become the EuroMillions lottery jackpot record holder for the foreseeable future, or at least until lottery officials reverse the January 2012 rule change.

It took until August 2012 for Europe’s premier lottery to offer a €190 million jackpot, and the enormous prize was in fact won by a single lottery ticket. Adrian and Gillian Bayford of England were the new EuroMillions lottery jackpot record winners, claiming €5 million more than previous EuroMillions record holders Chris and Colin Weir of Scotland.

Looking at the table above, the Weirs are ranked ahead of the Bayfords in the EuroMillions UK top 5 millionaires list. This is because EuroMillions UK, the British version of Europe’s EuroMillions lottery, pays its winners in pounds sterling, rather than euros. When the Weirs claimed their prize in July 2011, the euro was relatively strong and their €185 million EuroMillions win was worth £161 million in their local currency.

Thirteen months later, when the Bayfords’ won the €190 million record EuroMillions jackpot, the pound was stronger against the euro and the Bayfords received a cheque for £148 million. It is important to note that as UK lottery winnings, neither the Weirs nor the Bayfords were liable to pay tax on their wins!
